KC’s Parrot
Tena May Dowd left Wichita for Kansas City in the 1930s, where she opened the Green Parrot Inn at 52nd Street and State Line Road. From humble beginnings as a 3-room frame structure on an overgrown lot to seating 300 diners daily – Tena’s establishment became “the place” in Kansas City to enjoy delicious fried chicken meals!
The Green Parrot Inn enjoyed longstanding popularity. At its height during World War II, it served up to 1600 family-style fried chicken dinners every Sunday in its old residential-style dining room with patterned wallpaper and airy windows along one wall. Customers sat at home-sized tables where they received family-sized bowls of Spanish rice, cottage cheese, green beans, mashed potatoes with cream gravy, homemade Parker House rolls, and much more.
KC’s Parrot 41 Bar and Grill will continue its legacy at its new East Naples location near the Collier County Courthouse with a Pints for Parrots event from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug 20, to raise funds for Brazil’s Hyacinth Macaw Conservation Project; $1 from each pint sold will be donated, along with $2 for every custom blue cocktail purchased.
